Deciding on a new hairstyle can be a daunting one, especially if you prefer to stick with what you know. However, choosing the right haircut and care regime can work wonders to keep your hair looking youthful and healthy over time. “With age, hair needs more than ever to look healthy and shiny, just like skin,” celebrity stylist and Fudge Professional global ambassador Jonathan Andrew told Express.co.uk.
“As we age hair strands become smaller and have less pigment, so the thick, coarse hair of our youth eventually becomes thin and fine. Getting the right haircut and regular cuts every five to eight weeks will ensure your hair remains healthy.”
As well as the cut you want, deciding where your parting will be can play a huge role in creating a contemporary look. If you’re confused about what style will look best on you, choosing the length that best suits your overall aesthetic and lifestyle is a good place to start.
“Short hair is best with either no parting, think your crops, or the break parting as this gives the hairstyle more direction,” explained Andrew. “For mid-length hair, the zig-zag parting gives the hair and face a more interesting finish.
“But, the non-directional parting is fab and sexy on long hair -think Bardot. A middle parting can look too hippy unless that’s what you want!”

Identifying your face shape can also be a key indicator of what parting will work best for you. The right parting will frame the face and trick the eye into transforming your overall appearance.
“For a round face, diagonal or asymmetric partings are perfect as they will offset the roundness and create angles to the face,” explained Andrew. “[The best parting for] oval faces is down to preference as any parting or cut will suit this face shape. It’s the most flexible of the shapes.
“A middle parting works best for square faces, as it gives a symmetric finish to the face and cut For heart-shaped faces, diagonal or tear-drop partings bring out the best features as they are too harsh and soften the angles in the face.”
But youthful-looking hair also lies in its overall health, which means identifying what your hair is lacking and giving it an added boost with hair care regimes. Thin, fine hair can be aided by “increasing the volume of hair with targeted products which help to add body”.
