Britain might be heading for the longest recession in a century but it has not cramped Chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s style – he’s using Brad Pitt’s hairdresser, who charges at least £110 a time to come to Downing Street.

Mr Hunt, who is preparing a brutal round of tax rises and public spending cuts in the autumn statement later this month, had a cut of his own when Gladys Lopez, a style director at the Errol Douglas salon in London’s Belgravia, visited No 11 last month.

Ms Lopez, who is originally from Colombia, has worked for more than two decades at the salon, whose celebrity clientele include supermodels Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell and singers Annie Lennox and Diana Ross, as well as Hollywood star Pitt.

‘Gladys always cuts his hair,’ a spokeswoman for the salon said. ‘Jeremy normally comes into the salon, but going forward she will be going into Downing Street.’
